Working abroad is often a dream for many. From a young age, we are taught that working overseas is a great opportunity to improve our family’s financial standing, primarily because of the higher salaries. Children are encouraged to study diligently, with the hope that one day, they might work abroad and secure a better future.

When we leave for a foreign country, we do so with heavy hearts, leaving our families behind but carrying the dream of achieving a better life. While it is true that working abroad can provide significant financial benefits for our families, the question remains: is it worth it?

Subsequently: can you make it? This is the hardest part. Many suffer in silence to achieve their dream life. Often, the struggles and sacrifices are unimaginable to those who have never experienced them. They endure insults and mistreatment just to get through each day. The emotional toll of being away from family can be overwhelming, leading to strained relationships and broken homes.

Getting sick is not an option because, in many cases, you only have yourself to rely on. Each day can feel like a month, and each month like a year, as the feeling of emptiness sets in. Additionally, abuses may happen, including unfair labor practices, non-payment of wages, and physical or emotional mistreatment. Domestic workers and those in low-skilled jobs are particularly vulnerable. The list goes on.

If others can do it, why can’t you? Sure, you can. I encourage you to pursue your dream if it can help your family achieve financial stability. But brace yourself, because it won’t be easy. Always keep your goal in mind—the reason you wanted to work abroad in the first place.

Remember, life isn’t always sunny; there will be rainy days, but the rainbow represents hope. If working abroad helps you and your family, keep going. If it starts to tear apart the family you’ve worked hard to support, it might be better to reconsider and find other ways.

At the end of the day, it’s not always about the money. Spending time with our families is more precious than gold. The real luxury in life is spending moments with loved ones, having peace of mind, being grateful for what we have, maintaining meaningful relationships, and being able to express oneself freely.

Some people work until old age, returning home only when they are sick and unable to work anymore. They spend their remaining years taking medications and regretting the lost time. So, while working abroad, save as much money as possible. After a few years, aim to return home, build a business or investment, and spend time with your loved ones. Don’t settle for the idea of working all your life. Life is meant to be cherished and spent with family. Every moment is precious, so make it worthwhile.

Let your journey abroad not only uplifts your family financially but also enriches you as a person and strengthens your relationship with those you love. The true wealth lies in contentment and that life is not all about money. It’s about the relationships we build, the love we share, and the peace we find within ourselves.
